The likely explanation involves virus strains. Multiple strains of curly top virus exist with varying severity. A variety documented as resistant to one strain may still show symptoms from another.
Oklahoma State University Extension takes the more conservative position outright. Its guidance states that all currently available tomato varieties are susceptible.
