ABOUT KNOWTOMATO

The tomato reference the internet was missing

KnowTomato is a reference library for one plant. Variety profiles built like encyclopedia entries, growing guides that go from seed packet to sauce jar, problem pages that diagnose instead of guessing, and calculators for the questions with numeric answers. One fruit, covered the way it deserves.

The variety library is the heart of it. Every tomato we document gets the same treatment: a researched history, honest flavor reporting, real spec numbers, a growing guide, and a straight answer to the question every profile should end with, which is whether this one belongs in your garden.

How we are different

Most tomato content online is catalog copy wearing a blog costume. The same recycled claims, the same suspiciously perfect histories, the same missing downsides.

We build every variety page from two separate tracks of research. One track collects what real growers report, including the failures, the complaints, and the regional differences. The other track verifies facts against university trials, extension publications, and peer reviewed research, and those are the only sources our pages cite.

When the record is contested, the page says so. Some famous tomato stories do not survive fact checking, and we publish the check rather than the legend. Where sellers disagree about a number, we show the honest range instead of inventing precision.

And every variety page carries a cons box, because a profile that only tells you what is good about a tomato is an advertisement, not a guide.

What we are not

We sell no seed and answer to no seed company. Some pages may carry affiliate links, always disclosed, and no recommendation is ever for sale. Our variety illustrations are labeled illustrations, built from documented traits and reference photographs, and never passed off as photos.

Who publishes this

KnowTomato is published as an independent editorial project. Every page invites corrections, and readers who catch errors make the site better. If you see something wrong, tell us, and we will check it and fix it.

Curious exactly how a page gets made? The whole process is documented on How We Work.

Why tomatoes?

Because they are the most grown crop in American home gardens, and still the most misunderstood. Forty million people grow them. Most advice they find was copied from somewhere else. Somebody had to go back to the sources.
