How to Fertilize Tomatoes

More fertilizer does not mean more tomatoes. That’s the first thing to get straight. The most common feeding mistake is pouring on the wrong stuff and ending up with a giant leafy jungle and barely any fruit.

Feeding tomatoes well isn’t complicated once you know what they actually want and when they want it. This guide covers the whole thing. The nutrients that matter, the numbers on the bag, a simple schedule, the organic options, and the popular myths quietly wasting your time. Let’s get into it.

What tomatoes actually need

Every fertilizer bag has three numbers on it, like 10-10-10 or 5-10-10. That’s the NPK, and it tells you the ratio of the three main nutrients.

Nitrogen (N) grows leaves and stems. It’s the green, leafy growth nutrient. Tomatoes need a decent amount early on, while they’re building the plant.

Phosphorus (P) feeds roots and flowers. Since fruit comes from flowers, phosphorus matters a lot for actually setting tomatoes.

Potassium (K) is the fruit nutrient. It builds size, flavor, and helps the plant shrug off disease. This is the one you want plenty of once fruit is on the way.

Two more come up constantly with tomatoes: calcium and magnesium. I’ll deal with both further down, because they’re tangled up in the biggest myths in tomato growing.

Start with your soil, not the fertilizer aisle

Before you buy anything, know this: if your soil is already rich and full of compost, your tomatoes might barely need feeding at all. Fertilizer fills gaps, it doesn’t replace good soil.

The honest way to find out what your soil is missing is a soil test. It’s cheap, your local extension office runs them, and it tells you exactly which nutrients are short instead of leaving you to guess. That one step saves you from dumping money and additives on a problem you don’t actually have.

Feed to fill the gaps a soil test shows and you’ll do less while getting more. Guess blindly and you’re about as likely to cause a problem as fix one.

The nitrogen trap (the number one mistake)

Here’s the one I see most. Someone grabs a high nitrogen lawn feed, or just keeps hitting the plant with a general purpose fertilizer. Their tomato explodes into a gorgeous green bush with almost no fruit on it.

That’s nitrogen doing exactly what nitrogen does. It drives leaves. Too much of it, especially once the plant is flowering, and the tomato throws all its energy into foliage instead of fruit.

So the rule is simple. Give it some nitrogen early to build the plant, then ease off the nitrogen and lean on phosphorus and potassium once flowers show up. A big leafy plant looks healthy, but leaves don’t taste like anything. Fruit is the whole point.

What NPK ratio to look for

You don’t need to overthink this. There are two easy paths.

A balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 works fine all season if you’d rather not fuss. Equal parts of everything, no thinking required.

A tomato or vegetable formula is even better. These are built with a lower first number and higher second and third numbers, something like 5-10-10 or 4-6-8. That lower nitrogen and higher potassium is exactly what a fruiting tomato is after.

Standing in the store trying to choose? Grab the one labeled for tomatoes or vegetables. It’s already mixed the way we just talked about. Skip anything labeled for lawns, since those are packed with nitrogen and will hand you that leafy, fruitless plant.

When to fertilize tomatoes

Timing matters as much as the type. Here’s a simple schedule that works:

The big idea is to feed lightly and steadily instead of dumping a lot at once. Tomatoes are hungry plants over a long season, so a little every week or two beats one giant feast that mostly washes away.

How often, and how to apply it

How often depends on the kind of fertilizer.

Granular and slow release feeds get worked into the soil and release over weeks. Mix some in at planting, then top up every four to six weeks.

Liquid feeds act fast and wash through quickly, so you reapply more often. Usually that means every one to two weeks once the plant is flowering and fruiting.

A routine a lot of growers swear by: a slow release granular at planting for the steady base. Then a liquid feed every week or two once fruit sets, for a boost right when the plant needs it most.

Organic and homemade options

You don’t need a synthetic bag to feed tomatoes well. Plenty of organic options work, they just tend to act slower and feed the soil as much as the plant.

Compost is the backbone. Worked into the bed or planting hole, it feeds gently all season and builds better soil at the same time. Almost impossible to overdo.

Aged manure adds a real nutrient boost, but it has to be well rotted. Fresh manure is too strong and will burn roots.

Fish emulsion is a fast acting liquid, high in nitrogen, handy for the early leafy stage.

Kelp or seaweed brings potassium and trace minerals, which is nice once fruiting kicks off.

Bone meal is a slow phosphorus source, often mixed in at planting to support roots and flowering.

Don’t stress about calcium and magnesium

These are the two extra nutrients everyone frets over with tomatoes, so let’s clear them up before the myths.

Calcium builds firm fruit and strong cell walls. A shortage inside the fruit shows up as blossom end rot. Magnesium keeps leaves green and helps the plant make energy, and a real shortage shows as yellowing between the veins of the older, lower leaves.

Here’s the part that matters though. Most garden soil already carries plenty of both, and genuine deficiencies are far rarer than the internet would have you believe. That’s exactly why the calcium and magnesium home remedies people swear by usually do nothing. If you truly suspect a shortage, a soil test settles it. The feeding myths worth ignoring

Tomato feeding has more folk remedies than almost any plant, and a lot of them fall apart under a closer look. Here are the big ones.

Epsom salt

This is the famous one. Epsom salt is magnesium, and it gets sold as a cure for blossom end rot and a trick for sweeter tomatoes. The science just doesn’t back it up.

Blossom end rot is a calcium issue, not a magnesium one, so magnesium doesn’t fix it. Worse, magnesium and calcium compete to get into the plant, so loading up on epsom salt can actually make blossom end rot more likely. As North Dakota State University Extension puts it, epsom salt doesn’t stop blossom end rot, it leads to more of it.

Eggshells for calcium

The idea that crushed eggshells in the planting hole stop blossom end rot is everywhere, and it doesn’t hold up either. Most soils already have plenty of calcium, and eggshells break down far too slowly to feed this year’s plant anyway.

Coffee grounds

Coffee grounds are fine to compost and they add a little organic matter. But they won’t transform your soil or feed your tomatoes the way some claim, and they don’t reliably change soil pH. Toss them in the compost pile and don’t expect magic.

Blossom end rot is a watering problem, not a feeding one

Since it comes up every single time feeding does, let’s settle it. Blossom end rot, that sunken dark patch on the bottom of the fruit, looks like a nutrient problem, so people reach for calcium.

But the calcium is almost always already in your soil. The reason it’s not reaching the fruit is usually inconsistent watering, because the plant carries calcium up with water. Let the soil swing from bone dry to soaked and back, and that calcium delivery breaks down, rotten bottoms and all.

Signs you’re feeding wrong

The plant will tell you when the feeding is off.

Too much nitrogen: a huge, dark green, leafy plant carrying few flowers or fruit. Ease off the nitrogen.

Not enough food: pale or yellowing leaves, slow growth, a weak and unproductive plant. Time to feed.

Fertilizer burn: brown, crispy leaf edges after a heavy dose. You overdid it, so water well and go lighter next time.

When you’re unsure, feed a little less. It’s far easier to add more than to walk back a nitrogen overload.
