That’s not a warning against greenhouse tomatoes. Done right, they’re spectacular. An earlier start, a later finish, bigger yields, and cleaner fruit than anything you’ll pull out of an open garden. But the people who fail in a greenhouse almost always fail the same way. They treat it like an outdoor garden with a roof. Why grow tomatoes in a greenhouse at all?

Job one: temperature (the numbers that matter)
Tomatoes fruit inside a surprisingly narrow temperature band, and a greenhouse swings way outside it in both directions if you let it. A closed greenhouse on a sunny spring day can blow past 100 degrees by lunchtime. An unheated one on a clear night can crash to near freezing.
Here are the numbers to hold. Keep days below about 85 degrees and nights above 60 during flowering, since University of Alaska Fairbanks Extension flags that window as the range where pollen actually germinates and fruit sets. Push past 90 in the day and flowers abort and drop. Let nights slide below 55 and pollen development quietly shuts down. That’s why an early spring greenhouse can look lush and healthy while setting zero fruit.
In practice that means two pieces of kit. Ventilation for the heat of the day, which we’ll get to next. And some heat for cold nights if you’re growing early or late, even just a small thermostat controlled electric heater. A cheap min-max thermometer hung at plant height tells you what’s really happening in there, and it’s the best few dollars a greenhouse grower can spend, because the swings will surprise you.
Job two: airflow and humidity
Outside, the wind dries the leaves and keeps air moving. Inside, air sits still and moisture builds, and warm damp stagnant air is exactly what fungal diseases dream about. Gray mold and leaf mold are greenhouse specialties for this reason.
So ventilation isn’t a nice extra, it’s a daily chore. Open the vents and door every morning once things warm up, and close them late afternoon to bank warmth for the night. Roof vents beat door-only setups because heat exhausts out the top and pulls fresh air through. If your greenhouse struggles to move air, a small circulation fan running on low earns its keep twice over, drying leaves and helping pollination.
The target is a middle band of humidity, around 60 to 80 percent, and that number matters more than people realize, as you’re about to see.
Job three: you’re the pollinator now
Here’s the greenhouse quirk that catches nearly everyone: plants covered in flowers, and no fruit. Nothing is wrong with the plants. Tomato flowers self pollinate, but only when something shakes the pollen loose, and indoors there’s no wind and few or no bees to do the shaking.
So you do it. SDSU Extension lays out the working methods. Tap the support strings or flower trusses every other day so the clusters vibrate. Or touch an electric toothbrush to the stem behind each flower cluster for a couple of seconds, which mimics a bumblebee’s buzz almost perfectly.
Timing is the part almost nobody knows. Do it midday, when humidity sits in that 60 to 80 percent window. Too humid and the pollen clumps into a sticky mess that won’t shake free, which is one more reason ventilation matters. Too hot or too cold, per the thresholds above, and the pollen is no good regardless of how much you shake. Commercial greenhouses skip all this by buying boxes of bumblebees, which produce measurably bigger, heavier fruit. Setting up: soil, spacing, and support

Beds or pots. Greenhouse borders (soil beds) hold water and nutrients better, but growing tomatoes in the same border soil year after year builds up disease. Either swap the soil out every couple of years, or grow in large pots and grow bags you refresh each season.
Don’t overcrowd. This is the classic greenhouse mistake. Space is tight, plants are expensive to heat, and it’s tempting to cram. Resist. Crowded plants in still air are a disease outbreak waiting to happen. Two feet between plants is a sensible floor.
Support from day one. Greenhouse tomatoes are usually indeterminate types trained up strings or tall stakes. Going vertical is how you get big yields out of a small footprint. In summer that can mean daily watering, and consistency matters more than volume. Erratic watering under glass is the fast lane to split fruit and blossom end rot. - Letting it cook. One forgotten morning with the vents shut can hit 100+ degrees and abort every flower on the plant. Automate vents or build the habit.
- Ignoring cold nights. Warm sunny days fool you while sub-55 nights silently kill fruit set. Watch the min on your thermometer, not the max.
- No pollination routine. Flowers dropping without fruit is almost never disease. It’s missing vibration. Every other day, midday.
- Overcrowding. More plants in still humid air means less fruit and more mold, not more harvest.
- Reusing tired border soil. Same soil, same spot, every year breeds root disease. Refresh it or switch to pots.
