What causes it

That colonization physically blocks water movement. A plant can wilt severely even in soil that has plenty of moisture. The blockage happens inside the plant, not in the ground around it.

The three races, and what the letter codes mean

Cutting the stem near the soil line reveals the real story.
Both sources describe a dark brown vascular discoloration inside the stem, visible as streaks near the soil line. University of California’s IPM program adds that this discoloration can extend far up the stem, not just near the base.
The decade long soil problem
This is where fusarium wilt earns its reputation. NC State Extension states the fungus can survive in soil for up to a decade. It shelters inside tough structures called chlamydospores.
That single fact reshapes how a gardener should think about an infected bed. A single season of rotation does very little against a pathogen built to wait that long.
