Tomato Root Rot: What It Actually Looks Like Underground

Tomato root rot gets blamed for a lot of droopy plants that do not actually have it. Andrea Cozza’s seedlings were a textbook example of that confusion. Their seedlings drooped even when the soil still felt moist, and they assumed root damage right away.

The real culprit that time was something else entirely. Real tomato root rot has a specific cause, a specific look, and specific conditions that invite it.

The short version

Two related fungi cause most tomato root rot: Phytophthora parasitica and Phytophthora capsici. Both need free water sitting in the soil to spread and infect roots.

When Phil pulled a dead plant and checked the roots, they were light brown and intact. Not slimy, not waterlogged. That detail mattered.

The extension expert, Char Rae, pointed to fungal blight instead of root rot. The roots looked normal, which made root rot an unlikely cause.

That comparison is worth remembering. Real root rot leaves an unmistakable mark on the roots themselves, not just on the leaves above.

What tomato root rot actually looks like below ground

The University of California’s Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program describes the damage directly. Infected roots develop brown lesions, and the internal tissue discolors from white toward yellowish or brown.

Severe infections girdle the roots or destroy them completely. At that point, the plant cannot take up enough water to support itself. That holds true no matter how much water sits in the soil.

Fruit pays a price too, when it touches infected soil. UC’s guidelines describe tan or brown spots with concentric rings where fruit meets contaminated ground. That symptom has its own name: buckeye rot.

One of the two causal fungi, Phytophthora capsici, goes a step further. It can also produce greasy, purple brown lesions on the stem itself.

Why the above ground symptoms confuse people

A wilted, stunted tomato plant can mean a dozen different things. That overlap is exactly what tripped up Andrea Cozza’s diagnosis on Houzz. Their seedlings showed drooping and edema, a swelling response to water stress, despite soil that still felt damp.

Another Houzz member, party_music50, offered a different read on that same thread. Their suggestion was underwatering, not overwatering. They recommended repotting into better draining mix with steadier watering.

Real root rot does share some of that same wilting and stunting. The difference only becomes clear once someone checks the roots themselves. That is exactly what Phil Meyer did on the Ask Extension thread.

The conditions that actually cause it

UC’s pest management guidelines are specific about what invites Phytophthora root rot. The fungi need free standing water in the soil to spread and infect.

Poorly drained, compacted, or overirrigated soil creates exactly that condition. Wide swings between soggy and dry soil make it worse rather than better. Stressed roots are simply more vulnerable to infection.

Containers carry extra risk here, since drainage depends entirely on the setup a grower builds. On a garden.org forum thread about container tomatoes, a member named BigBill made a useful point. A tomato’s root system usually only reaches 8 to 10 inches across.

A deep bucket often holds far more soil than the roots ever use.

Other members on that same thread traded real drainage fixes. A member named Christine drilled holes on both the sides and bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. Their summary of the goal was simple: tomatoes do not like sitting in water.

A member named embermason skipped bottom holes entirely. They used side holes a few inches up instead, paired with a watering tube down the center.

Root rot is not the same as wilt or blight

Oklahoma State University Extension draws an important line that gets blurred often. Fusarium wilt, a well known tomato disease, attacks the water conducting tissue inside the stem. It does not attack the root tissue itself, even though people often lump it in with root problems.

Pythium and Phytophthora are the true soil fungi behind root rot, and Oklahoma State’s own breakdown treats them separately from wilt.
