Built for Campbell’s factory. Rescued from their vault.

In 1928, Campbell Soup Company had a problem. They were canning millions of pounds of tomatoes every year. The varieties available to commercial growers at the time didn’t hold up on the processing line. Bruising. Inconsistent ripening. Flavor that changed batch to batch.

Campbell’s had a proprietary variety they called J.T.D. They brought it to the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station at Rutgers University. Lyman Schermerhorn led the work. He crossed J.T.D. with Marglobe, a disease resistant variety with a strong field record. Six years of trials followed. In 1934, Rutgers was released to the public.

It was built to survive a factory. Firm walls that held up on the processing line. Acid balanced for consistent soup flavor. Uniform ripening so a crew could harvest a full field in one pass. It worked. At peak, Rutgers covered 72 percent of commercial tomato acreage in the United States. Campbell’s used it. Hunt’s used it. Heinz used it. PJ Ritter used it. The condensed tomato soup in most American kitchens for most of the 20th century started as a Rutgers tomato in a New Jersey field.

Then mechanized harvesting arrived in the 1950s and 1960s. Machines needed tomatoes that ripened all at once with thicker skin that could handle mechanical pressure. Rutgers was bred for people picking by hand. The machines didn’t want it. Schermerhorn retired. The Rutgers germplasm scattered. By the late 1900s, most seeds sold as “Rutgers” were degraded lines with little connection to the original.

Tom Orton at the Rutgers NJAES spent years tracking down authentic seed stock through the Jersey Tomato Project. Campbell’s had kept a vault of the original seeds. In 2010, Orton’s team recovered them. In 2016, Rutgers 250 was released as a restored version of the original to mark the university’s 250th anniversary. The tomato that fed America through the soup can is back in home gardens.

What the fruit is like

Rutgers produces medium to large, globe shaped tomatoes. Most fruit runs 6 to 8 ounces. The color is deep, uniform red from skin to center. No green shoulders. No pale interior. Thick walls and small seed cavities throughout.

That internal structure is what made it ideal for canning. More flesh. Less liquid. Fewer seeds per ounce. Those same qualities make it a genuinely excellent fresh eating tomato. Slice one and you get thick, meaty cuts that hold together on a sandwich without turning watery.

The flavor is the pleasant surprise. Most growers expect a commercial canning tomato to taste flat. Rutgers doesn’t. The acid balance Schermerhorn selected for is exactly what makes a fresh tomato taste like a tomato. Bright, balanced, and clean. Not as complex as Brandywine. Not as bold as Black Krim. Better than most grocery store tomatoes bred for shelf life over flavor.

Days to maturity: 74 days from transplant. Mid season timing, similar to Celebrity and Big Boy.

The disease resistance gap

This is what most Rutgers content skips. It matters.

Rutgers carries no VFN disease resistance. No coding against Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, or nematodes. Schermerhorn bred for flavor, canning quality, and firm walls. Disease resistance was the job of field rotation on commercial farms with hundreds of acres to work with. It was never bred into the variety itself.

In healthy soil with good rotation habits, this rarely causes problems. The plants are vigorous and productive in clean ground. In beds with a history of Fusarium, Verticillium, or nematode pressure, Rutgers will decline faster than a resistant variety. It will still grow. But you’ll see wilt and decline earlier in the season than a VFN variety like Celebrity would show.

Rutgers carries no Fusarium, Verticillium, or nematode resistance. In clean soil with good rotation, it performs excellently. In beds with known wilt or nematode pressure, plant a resistant variety alongside for comparison. The disease gap is real but not a dealbreaker in healthy soil.

How to grow Rutgers Tomato, start to finish

Starting seeds

Start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date. Sow seeds a quarter inch deep in a clean seed starting mix. Keep soil temperature between 70 and 80°F. A heat mat keeps germination fast and consistent in early spring when room temperatures are still variable.

Set up fluorescent or LED grow lights close to the canopy from the day seedlings emerge. Keep them 2 to 3 inches above the plant tops. Raise them as growth continues. A seedling that stretches toward distant light builds a weak stem. That stem has to support a productive fruiting vine through a full season.

Pot up to individual containers when the first true leaves appear. Feed weekly at half strength with a balanced liquid fertilizer from that point through transplant day. A well fed seedling establishes in the garden far ahead of anything that was cramped or underfed early.

Rutgers is open pollinated and grows true from saved seed. Scoop seeds and gel from a fully ripe fruit into a jar of water. Ferment for 2 to 3 days. Rinse, dry flat, and store somewhere cool and dry until spring. One practical note: seeds sold as “Rutgers” at most garden centers today are often not authentic. If seed integrity matters, source from the Rutgers NJAES directly or from suppliers specifically carrying Rutgers 250.

Transplanting

Move plants outside after your last frost date, once nights hold reliably above 50°F. Cold nights below 54°F during flower formation cause catfacing. Rutgers produces medium to large fruit, making it moderately susceptible to catfacing on the first flush. Wait for genuinely warm nighttime temperatures before moving plants out permanently.

Harden off over 7 to 10 days. Set plants outside for increasing periods each day before leaving them out permanently. Indoor seedlings moved directly to full sun and outdoor wind experience shock. A proper hardening period prevents that setback at the exact moment you want the plant focusing on root establishment.

Bury two thirds of the stem at planting. Tomatoes produce roots along any buried stem section. Strip any leaves that would go below soil level before planting. A deeper root system means more stability and more drought tolerance as the season progresses.

Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart. Rutgers builds a full, bushy canopy when it has room. Crowded plants trap humid air around the lower foliage, and Rutgers has no disease resistance to compensate for poor airflow. Give it adequate space from planting day.

Soil and feeding

Rich, well drained soil loaded with compost, pH 6.0 to 6.5. Work a balanced organic fertilizer into the planting hole before setting the plant in. This slow release base supports root development without pushing sudden leafy growth in the first weeks after transplant.

Switch to a lower nitrogen tomato feed once the first flowers open. High nitrogen after flowering pushes leaves at the expense of fruit. Feed every two weeks through the full season. Rutgers sets fruit from mid season through early fall. Tapering off nutrition in August while the plant is still producing is a common mistake.

Blossom end rot can appear on Rutgers fruit. Consistent moisture and a compost rich soil base handle most of the risk. Keep pH in range. Keep watering even. Skip the calcium spray products. They treat the symptom. The cause is irregular moisture disrupting calcium movement to developing fruit.

Light and water

Full sun, 8 hours minimum. Rutgers is a mid season variety that needs full heat and light to develop its acid balance and flavor. Partial shade extends maturity and reduces both yield and the bright, clean flavor that makes this tomato worth growing.

Water deeply and consistently at the base of the plant. Target 1 to 2 inches per week. Rutgers was bred with firm walls that handle moisture variation better than thin skinned heirlooms. Consistent moisture still prevents the cracks and splits that affect any ripe tomato after a surge. A drip line or soaker hose delivers water where it’s needed without wetting the foliage.

Lay 2 to 3 inches of straw mulch around the plant after a deep watering. Mulch stabilizes soil moisture between rain events. It reduces temperature spikes during hot weeks. It also stops disease spores from splashing up onto lower leaves during rain. With a variety that has no disease resistance, mulch does real preventive work.

Support and pruning

Rutgers is indeterminate. In good soil it reaches 5 to 6 feet and keeps growing until frost. Compact for an indeterminate, but it still needs real support. A sturdy cage or tall stakes set at planting time both work. Set the support before roots spread.

Tie growing stems to the support with soft plant ties or strips of fabric. Nothing that cuts into swelling stems. Check every two weeks through the season. A loop that was comfortable in June can damage a stem by August as it swells around it.

Remove suckers below the first flower cluster. This keeps the lower canopy open for airflow. Above the first cluster, let the plant develop two to three main leaders. Rutgers produces its best yield on those upper branches. Aggressive sucker removal above the first cluster reduces total yield without improving individual fruit quality.

Strip any foliage touching the ground. Soil to leaf contact is the primary entry route for early blight spores. Keep the lowest foot of the plant clear throughout the season. Strip spotted leaves immediately. This variety has no disease resistance to fall back on.

Problems to watch

No disease resistance. The main structural vulnerability. Rutgers has no VFN coding. In beds with Fusarium, Verticillium, or nematode pressure, the plant will decline faster than a resistant variety. Rotate beds each season. Strip spotted lower leaves the day you see them. Water at the soil. Rapid wilting in an otherwise healthy looking plant often points to soil disease rather than a surface problem.

Early blight. No resistance here either. Brown spots with concentric rings on lower leaves, climbing from the base. Strip affected leaves immediately. Keep foliage dry. Rotate beds each season. Early blight gets ahead of you fast in an unresistant variety if you let it go.

Catfacing. Cool nights below 54°F during flower formation cause it. First flush fruit may show scarring at the blossom end. Safe to eat. Trim and use it. Midseason fruit from the same plant comes in clean.

Blossom end rot. A risk with any mid to large sized tomato. Consistent moisture is the fix. Keep soil moisture even through the season. Mulch helps stabilize it. Hornworms. A 5 to 6 foot vine carrying 6 to 8 ounce tomatoes is exactly what they target. Check undersides of leaves and look for stripped stems weekly through summer. Dark droppings on the ground below a branch are the sign. Handpick or treat with Bt at first appearance.

Container growing

Rutgers handles containers better than most indeterminate tomatoes of comparable production. The plant reaches 5 to 6 feet rather than 8 to 10, and the fruit runs 6 to 8 ounces rather than a pound or more. That makes the container math more manageable.

Use a 10 gallon container of quality potting mix at minimum. Set a stake or cage at planting. Water daily in summer heat. Feed every week to 10 days because containers flush nutrients much faster than ground beds. Expect slightly lower yield than a ground planted vine, but Rutgers adapts to containers more gracefully than large beefsteak types do.

Rutgers vs the other mid season red slicers

Celebrity is the most direct modern comparison. Both are mid season, medium to large, red slicers. Celebrity carries full VFN disease resistance; Rutgers does not. In gardens with disease pressure, Celebrity is the practical choice. In clean soil, many growers who have grown both prefer the Rutgers flavor. The acid balance Schermerhorn bred for shows up clearly in a fresh eating comparison.

Big Boy is another useful comparison. Both are open pollinated, mid season slicers with no nematode resistance. Big Boy produces larger fruit and has a loyal following built around aroma and flavor. Rutgers produces more uniformly and holds up well in direct fresh eating comparisons. They solve similar problems from different directions.

The verdict

Rutgers fed America for most of the 20th century through a soup can. That’s not marketing. It’s 72 percent of commercial tomato acreage, a Campbell’s seed vault, and a rescue project that took eighty years.

The irony for home gardeners is that a tomato bred for factory canning turns out to be excellent in the garden. The thick walls slice clean. The acid balance is exactly what a fresh tomato should taste like. And the open pollinated genetics mean you can save seeds and grow the same plant next year.

Give it clean soil, real support, and consistent water. Strip spotted leaves early and keep the lower canopy open. In those conditions, Rutgers delivers what it always has.
