Calcium for Tomatoes: Do Eggshells and Tums Actually Work?

Calcium for tomatoes is the fix everyone reaches for the moment they spot blossom end rot. Crushed eggshells go into the planting hole. Crushed Tums tablets go into the watering can.

That reflex usually misses the actual problem. Most garden soil already has plenty of calcium. The disorder is almost always about how that calcium moves, not how much of it exists.

Why eggshells do not fix it in time

Eggshells are made of calcium carbonate, and that fact is not in dispute. The problem is speed, not chemistry.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension states it directly. Adding eggshells will not make calcium available to plants quickly enough to help with blossom end rot already in progress.

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension in Fulton County ran an informal trial on depleted soil. Whole eggshells were still intact in a compost pile after a full year. Crushed and ground eggshells released calcium faster, but even the fastest form still takes real time to break down.

Even under ideal conditions, the process still runs on a timeline of weeks to months. A forming tomato only has a few weeks to work with.

Tums are the same chemistry, and the same problem

Tums tablets are also calcium carbonate, the identical compound found in eggshells. That similarity is exactly why the same limitation applies.

No university extension study reviewed for this guide tested Tums specifically. The chemistry does not need a separate study to explain the outcome. Calcium carbonate dissolves slowly in soil regardless of its source.

Gardeners on forums like Houzz and GardenWeb debate this constantly. They often cite conflicting advice from different experts. One frequently repeated claim, attributed to longtime tomato writer Carolyn Male, holds that university studies show eggshells, Tums, and calcium sprays have no measurable effect on blossom end rot.

That claim lines up with what the extension sources in this guide independently found.

Why spraying calcium on the leaves does not work either

Foliar calcium sprays are a popular next step once eggshells and Tums fail. Clemson Cooperative Extension explains why sprays fail too. The reason has nothing to do with concentration or timing.

Calcium absorbed by a leaf cannot move through the phloem into developing fruit. The fruit’s own skin also cannot absorb calcium sprayed directly onto it in any meaningful amount.

That leaves foliar sprays unable to reach the one place the calcium actually needs to go.

When calcium supplementation actually helps

Calcium is not always irrelevant. University of Georgia research is clear about when it does matter.

Soluble calcium sources like calcium nitrate can genuinely raise calcium levels inside developing fruit. That requires applying them through drip irrigation, starting at bloom and continuing until the fruit reaches golf ball size.

Tissue testing backs this up with real numbers. Healthy tomato leaves should run between 1.25 and 3.20 percent calcium. Testing before bloom can catch a real deficiency before it shows up as rot.

The same starting point applies here. Test the soil first, then correct based on the results rather than guessing.

What actually prevents blossom end rot

Consistent soil moisture is the single biggest lever, and every source in this guide agrees on it. Water on a regular schedule rather than letting the soil swing between dry and soaked.

Mulch helps hold that moisture steady between waterings. A two to three inch layer of straw or compost buys real insurance during a hot, dry stretch.
