Most tomato diseases get misdiagnosed, and it costs people their whole crop. They see spots, they spray something random from the garden center, and two weeks later the plant is worse. The spray they grabbed treats a disease their plant doesn’t have. Or worse, their plant has one of the diseases nothing can treat.
So this guide works the way an actual diagnosis works. First I’ll show you where to look and the three visual patterns that separate the big diseases at a glance. Then we’ll go disease by disease, with the honest answer on which ones you can fight and which ones mean pulling the plant. And then the part that matters more than any spray: the handful of habits that stop most of these from ever showing up.
Start at the bottom of the plant
Here’s the single most useful thing to know before you inspect anything: most tomato disease starts on the lowest leaves and climbs.
That’s not a coincidence. The fungi and bacteria that cause the classic tomato diseases live in the soil and on old plant debris. They reach your plant by splashing up onto the lowest leaves when rain or watering hits the dirt. So the bottom foot of the plant is where trouble starts. The three-pattern quick triage
Spots on your leaves? Before anything else, match the pattern. The three big fungal diseases each leave a distinct signature, and telling them apart takes one close look.
Bullseye rings on a few spots, lower leaves first: early blight. The spots are brown, roughly circular, and the giveaway is concentric rings inside each spot, like a little target. Clemson’s extension describes the bull’s-eye pattern on older foliage with the leaf yellowing around each lesion. It moves steadily but not fast, and caught early it’s very manageable.
Dozens and dozens of small freckles: septoria leaf spot. Instead of a few larger targets, septoria throws confetti. Many small circular spots with dark edges and pale tan centers, and if you look closely, tiny black dots in the centers of the spots. It shows up on the lower leaves right around the time fruit sets, and it defoliates plants from the bottom up if ignored.
Big greasy dark patches spreading fast: late blight. This is the emergency. Water-soaked, dark, irregular blotches that grow visibly day to day, with white fuzzy mold on the leaf undersides at the edges of the patches in damp weather. Two entries there deserve their own words, because they’re the ones where honest advice differs from what the spray aisle implies.
The wilts: the ones no spray touches
Fusarium and verticillium wilt are soil-dwelling fungi that invade through the roots and clog the plant’s water-carrying vessels from the inside. The classic picture is a plant that yellows and wilts, often starting on just one side or one branch, and doesn’t perk up after watering. Cut a main stem near the base and you’ll find the tell: dark brown staining inside the stem where the plumbing should be pale.
Here’s the truth the fungicide shelf won’t tell you: there is no cure. Not organic, not synthetic. A wilted-out plant is done, and the fungus stays in that soil for years. The real fight happens before planting, in two moves. Don’t put tomatoes back in that spot (more on rotation below), and buy resistance. The same no-cure honesty applies to the viruses, mosaic and its relatives, which show up as mottled, puckered, distorted foliage. Remove the plant, wash your hands and tools, and don’t compost it.
What about blossom end rot?
Quick but important detour, because it’s the most common “disease” that isn’t one. Those sunken black leathery bottoms on your fruit are blossom end rot, and no pathogen is involved. It’s a calcium delivery failure caused almost always by uneven watering, which means sprays and treatments do nothing. Prevention is the actual medicine
Here’s my honest take after everything above: for home growers, the war on tomato disease is won or lost before the first spot ever appears. Sprays are a rearguard action. These habits are the army.
Rotate. The blights, septoria, and the wilts all overwinter in soil and debris. Clemson’s standard is blunt: no tomatoes (or their nightshade cousins, peppers, potatoes, eggplant) in the same ground within three years. In a small garden, even swapping beds annually helps.
Water the soil, never the leaves. Splashing water is the delivery system for nearly everything above. Drip lines or a soaker hose at the base, mornings, and the leaves stay dry. It’s the highest-return disease habit there is.

Give them air. Crowded, damp, still foliage is a fungal incubator. Clemson calls for around three feet between plants. Getting vines up off the ground on a proper support system does as much for disease as any product you can buy. Clean up in fall. Diseased debris left in the bed is next year’s outbreak, pre-installed. Bag it, don’t compost it.
